Peter has described Doctor Who as a "television factory". "And also a bit mental". Enter Pearl Mackie, the newest occupant of the TARDIS, who partially landed the gig of companion because she is unfamiliar with the world of Who.
A lot of this has to do with our latest companion: Bill Potts.
We first meet Bill when the Doctor (currently played by Peter Capaldi) calls her into his office at a stately university, where he's apparently been giving philosophical lectures to rapt students for going on 70 years now.
Speaking to Good Morning Britain, she said: "It's great isn't it".
Season 10 of Doctor Who begins today, April 15.
"The correct response should be 'what took you so long?'"
Times have changed, and a more dynamic, action-orientated approach to production reinvented the show for a new generation, while still honouring its roots and long history. His character first appeared in the Christmas special "The Husbands of River Song" in 2015. Sure, she does the normal spin-around-in-the-TARDIS moment like every single companion ever, but she also quickly get back to the basics without it trying too hard by asking where the loo is.
"It's very hard to explain to somebody how it feels when you're in the middle of a show of this scale", said Capaldi, who won an Oscar in 1995 for his short film "Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life", which he wrote and directed.
"So if I was reaching the point where I wasn't allowed to try things out any more I thought, well, that's not really what I want to be doing". The terminology, "the official companion" is why she's the first gay companion. Amy was "The Girl Who Waited". "Just imagine", she says, "if someone did this to you". But even Bill's sexuality is treated in a casual and everyday a manner.
"The new Cybermen are kind of slick and they look like a familiar robot but the old Cybermen, there's something really haunting about them". Merchandising has dropped sharply in recent years and there is a strong desire to boost the show's popularity among kids. When Alicia Keys came out that was a big thing for me because she was mixed race as well. "If there is, I just won't listen to it".
What do you think is the show's importance, particularly to younger viewers?
During the middle of Steven Moffat's reign as showrunner - Series 6 in 2011, if we're being exact - the show disappeared up a wormhole in its own behind for a while. "Doctor What?" she asks, undermining the series' standing joke.
Inside, Bill quickly brushes off her encounter. But I do understand that representation is important.
"She makes mistakes and she doesn't always think before she speaks and I'm definitely guilty of that, so that's something I connect with". It's all about time. It's got monsters, an unfortunate rip in the fabric of time and space, pop culture-obsessed characters who quip and banter, and an acerbic adult on hand to provide guidance and, on occasion, to skillfully exude irritation.
Watch Capaldi and Mackie give us a quick introduction to the season's first episode. Which would be an utter shame.
"Doctor Who" season 10 is just around the corner.
In January, he announced he's leaving after this season, noting "it's time to move on".
The 10th series will also see the return of John Simm as the Time Lord's arch-nemesis The Master. And noted that it is going to be more complicated than what happened in the past.
Meeting a new Doctor Who companion is like ordering a new drink at your regular bar.
Speaking about her role, Pearl said previously: "I knew I could bring her to life". Mackie could well be the breath of fresh air the series needs. But Mackie is more than breath of anything.
