Anne Hathaway is learning plenty of new things as a parent!
"I'm really lucky I said yes to the movie before I was pregnant and I memorized my lines early", she says. I don't know, Hathaway kind of rubbed me the wrong way during that time. I was in a little bit of a lower place than usual about my career; it was just an awkward moment in terms of transitioning from your 20s into your 30s.
Hathaway then noted that her feelings towards social media have changed since she realized posts can easily be construed any which way. And while the actress did have a party for him, she says it was a pretty casual affair.
That script was "Colossal", by Spanish writer-director Nacho Vigalondo ("Timecrimes"). The old school friend Oscar (Jason Sudeikis) who gives Gloria a job in his bar turns out to be an envious creep who resents her migration to the Big City.
The Godzilla-sized creature in South Korea somehow connected to Gloria's binge-drinking leads to a terrific lush lady-versus-nice guy showdown.
A young girl, searching for her missing doll, stumbles upon a giant monster that mysteriously disappears in a puff of smoke without causing any harm. Weird, right? Well, that doesn't even begin to describe this one, which has a second half that's downright bonkers, including a third act you'll never see coming. It's a comedy. It's a monster movie.
"Only two?" Hathaway chuckles. It was maybe the dumbest thing they've done for the industry to agree that the best way to sell a movie is to show all of it. I was ready to face these situations. There are metaphors of addiction, control, empathy. there's so many. It proves character pieces and monster movies can inhabit the same universe, offering one genre interesting insights into the other.
"I liked that somebody who was so self-absorbed could also be so caring", Hathaway says of Gloria. An idea that still finds echoes in Colossal.
"That really spoke to me". There was a seemingly unwarranted dislike that seemed to follow her in 2013; it was nearly as though people felt like she was undeserving of her accolades, or that she was obnoxious simply because she expressed happiness at her own success. But yeah that just rattled me, especially growing up in Kansas, it was scary as hell.
HATHAWAY: You're gonna get so many more props for you saying that than me saying Pacific Rim. "But this one did".
The 34-year-old recently opened up about how she and husband Adam Shulman threw their son a rainbow-themed party for his first birthday. She'll appear opposite famous names including Sarah Paulson, Cate Blanchett and popstar Rihanna, who made a big impression on star struck Anne. Unable to resist the PBR that surrounds her, Gloria tunes in to the news the next day to discover the consequences of her face-planting: "I killed a shitload of people because I was acting like a drunk idiot again".
"There's a shot in the movie when I saw it and I was like "oh see, I kept my butt in great shape".style="text-align: center;"
