The Arizona Diamondbacks hope to keep their pitching on a roll when they face the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates again Friday night.
"Any time you see one of your family members go through something like that, it's pretty traumatic", D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said to the media. "So, we're taking every precaution possible to make sure he is OK".
Thankfully, Iannetta was able to walk off the field under his own power, though bloodied.
The Pirates are still looking for theirs as the teams prepare for the opener of a four-game series on Thursday at Chase Field in a matchup featuring each team's No. 1 starter - Arizona's Zack Greinke and Pittsburgh's Gerrit Cole.
Nova had a bit of a stumble coming into the month, but bounced back in his last start with two earned on seven hits in 6.1 innings.
Lovullo told the media following the game that Iannetta had been up and walking and everything was fine with him. Things got out of hand when A.J. Pollock tripled into the gap in left-center, David Peralta doubled down the right-field line and Goldschmidt singled against a drawn-in infield after a wild pitch.
The slumping Pirates (14-22) lost their season-high sixth straight game.
Pirates catcher Chris Stewart took a retaliatory pitch from Tom Wilhelmson in the ninth inning, and now bygones are bygones. Tempers flared again in May 2016, when Arizona's second baseman Jean Segura was hit on the helmet with a pitch. He has four homers and 17 RBIs in Arizona.
In the first seven innings, Greinke struck out 11 batters and walked just one, throwing 90 pitches in the process.
Prior to the incident, Iannetta went 1-for-3 at the plate with a 441-foot solo home run.
"The game demands execution", Hurdle said.
Lovullo said Saturday tests for a concussion were negative and that Iannetta was still being monitored. Infielders Chris Bostick and Max Moroff were sent to Triple-A Indianapolis. Frazier had been on the DL since April 23 with a left hamstring strain. In the finale Sunday afternoon, Robbie Ray (2-3, 4.14) opposes right-hander Ivan Nova (3-3, 2.23).style="text-align: center;"
