In the two days since FBI Director James Comey's dismissal, Sarah Huckabee Sanders has stood in for often-embattled White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, and her performances have already drawn fire on the internet. "They're liars. They're liars, they're awful people, they're liars, the press goes. I'm telling you exactly what President Trump told me", the press secretary said.
Six West Wing officials told the Times that Trump is dissatisfied with several top aides, especially Spicer, who the president kept out of the loop about the decision to fire Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey out of fear Spicer's staff would leak the news to media outlets.
But Sanders has not looked rattled under the spotlight, and Spicer's job security has been questioned after reports surfaced that he had a "meltdown" in the wake of Comey's sudden firing Tuesday. "The advice he's getting is to go big - that he has nothing to lose".
She offered an extreme characterization of Comey's actions, raising more than a few eyebrows among reporters when she said he had committed "atrocities" by circumventing the Justice Department's chain of command and repeatedly going public with details of the email inquiry.
The sketch included "Spicer" attacking reporters with fire extinguishers and even structures of the White House itself before the reporters asked if Trump is lying to Spicer.
"It's been really odd because I just never expected to get quite this much in the way of attention, but I'm just really happy people seem to be enjoying it", she said. Her bullish defenses of the president were delivered without the apparent frustration or stammering we've come to expect from Spicer.
"All right, let me put this whole Russian Federation thing to bed once and for all", she said. The president chose to make changes to the communication team because of his dissatisfaction with several top authorities, mainly Spicer.
It spawned the best meme of the week, giving Twitter an easy shot at Trump's talking head. She then proceeded to unpack the doll saying, "Here's Trump. Now accusing press of being 'obsessed'". "First of all, here's Trump", McCarthy began. She says that after fielding a veritable tsunami of requests for the picture she made a decision to upload it to Dropbox.com, where interest was so great that it temporarily crashed the Internet sharing site. Photos and video of McCarthy, as Spicer, in midtown Manhattan, rolling around behind the White House lectern, also stoked expectations.
Oliver Willis, senior writer for the liberal ShareBlue, is also not a fan.
Earlier in her briefing Thursday, Sanders claimed that Comey's firing had not altered the Russian Federation investigation at all.
The spin from Sanders - whose official title is principal deputy press secretary - may not have been wholly different from what you may have expected from Spicer. "Sarah Huckabee Sanders is working tirelessly to convince us that night is day".style="text-align: center;"
