The BuzzFeed article cites four employees who said Trump had a switchboard of sorts in his bedroom at Mar-a-Lago that he occasionally used to eavesdrop a decade ago.

And Trump's public statements in an interview on Thursday indicated he had several reasons for firing Comey.

When he fired Comey earlier this week, Trump garnered comparisons to President Richard Nixon and his infamous decision to remove the special prosecutor investigating Watergate crimes in 1973. He said in an interview on Thursday with NBC News that Comey gave him this assurance during the White House dinner and in two phone conversations.
It's a claim made of Comey that has many experts skeptical.
Comey has not publicly discussed any conversations he has had with Trump.
On MSNBC Friday afternoon, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told Andrea Mitchell that Comey told him he was having dinner at the White House that evening, and that he was "uneasy" over the invitation from Trump.
Trump fired Comey this week ostensibly because of his handling of the FBI's investigation of Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server; critics say that Trump is trying to quash the agency's investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign to influence the presidential election.

At a congressional hearing in March, Comey refused to answer a question from Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) as to whether or not Trump himself was under investigation by the FBI.
The host, Nicole Wallace, a former communications director to President George W. Bush, asked why Republicans are mostly standing on the sidelines this week as Trump attacks the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director who was leading a probe of the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation. Moscow has denied any such meddling.
Politicians from both parties reprimanded Mr Trump's actions last week, which included shifting explanations from the White House for Mr Comey's dismissal and an ominous tweet by Mr Trump that warned Mr Comey against leaks to the press because he may have "tapes" of their conversations.
