Injustice 2 is the best kind of sequel, one that builds on what worked and adds more to mess with and learn about. A lady dressed as a cat uses a motorbike as an offensive weapon, that's got to be interesting no matter who you are. "It is tricky, because you have to respect the characters and not get too insane with them, but DC's been really cool about us pushing the line and doing what we wanted to do with them".

Button mashing in Injustice 2 is less likely to be rewarded with accidentally doing a cool combo than it is getting thrown through the wall. Much of that effort is abundantly clear. Now it's as projectile heavy as the first Injustice, but I'm definitely interested to see what the community can do with awesomely up-close characters like Black Canary, tricky mixup utilizers like Robin, mid-range characters with long reaches and good zoning options like Swamp Thing, Poison Ivy, or Scarecrow, or if they'll resort to long-range Shooty McGunners like Deadshot.
Things are looking up until uber-villain Brainiac arrives, threatening to destroy the planet and forcing the fractured Justice League to put aside their differences - if they can manage it without tearing each others' throats out. Do you have to interface with them more?
But time, and the full review, will tell if Injustice 2 can survive in the competitive fighting genre. Fighting games are thinking games, so finding new ways to convince players to experiment with new strategies and tactics is already enough to have Injustice 2 stand as the better of the two games. Every item has various stat boosts that'll make fighters more powerful, which gives you more excuses to keep coming back.
Why would DC superheroes fight each other in brutal battles? Players only intervene during fight sequences, but thankfully, NetherRealm have mastered being able to go from a cutscene to a fight without any interruption.
At one point, for example, you fight Swamp Thing on his territory.

The series has become known now for it's slower paced, more methodical approach to fighting games compared to lightning fast titles like Street Fighter. Brainiac, while a more hard enemy, is little more than that, and he's tossed aside nearly as quickly as he is physically introduced. His need to form an expanded circle of trust is first and foremost on his mind; Green Arrow, Black Canary and a reformed Harleen Quinn are among the heroes in his small group of allies, though reformed Regime members Flash and Green Lantern are desperate to rejoin the fight. Even then, this is a brawler worth investing your time into. As a result, I never really found myself skipping their intros every time I played couch multiplayer. He mostly attributes that to the studio's heritage as the home of the notoriously violent Mortal Kombat fighting games. I mean, it's a dude punching some other dude. So while Grodd's attacks may not be as strong, this customized Grodd can take a beating. Fortunately, I don't have to answer that question because Injustice 2 connects you to opponents quickly and consistently, outside of a couple times where I had to wait a few minutes to get a battle going.
It's a complex and often bewildering system, and tournament organizers will prefer to turn them off. Fortunately, you can't buy this gear, so it's not any sort of pay-to-win concept. It's a system that players can wholly avoid, but those that go down that path will find satisfaction in making Injustice 2 their own.
Fighting games should be about individual skill only. But rather than feeling unfair, it just feels unnecessary.
I feel very lonely on my island. For the most part, each character felt unique.
But these fruits are soured by lazy, contrived storytelling, and a gear system that stands in opposition to what fighting games should be about. However, when a video game spinoff is a digital first series, it doesn't exactly feel like a vote of confidence (strike three).
