A few months later, he pointed a military-style rifle at a suburban Washington baseball diamond and opened fire, leaving House Republican Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana in critical condition and injuring four others before he was killed by Capitol police.
Vice President Mike Pence earlier on Thursday said he visited MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where Scalise was being treated.
Scalise's office released a statement from his wife, Jennifer, thanking people for their support and praising the two Capitol Police officers, Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who were injured while bringing down the gunman.
Hemorrhaging is still the biggest concern for Scalise's medical team, but Sava said he fully expects Scalise will be able to walk again and "an excellent recovery is a good possibility".
Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, says several operations have controlled the bleeding and Scalise's vital signs have stabilized.
Investigators studying Wednesday's attack at a suburban Virginia park said Thursday that shooter James Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers.
Mr Scalise remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit, but his risk of death is "substantially lower than when he came in", Mr Sava said.
Sava told reporters that predicting Scalise's length of hospital stay was "difficult", but said it would be for a "considerable" amount of time, "presumably weeks".
White House counselor Kellyanne Conway tweeted a comment Friday. "At the request of the family, we will continue to provide periodic updates". "I hope that this spirit of respect and cherishing of American democracy will carry forward in the halls of Congress and all across our country".
The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more unsafe than leaving them in place, Sava said.
"We pray for all of the victims of this bad crime who are still recovering - including Zachary Barth and Matt Mika, both of whom are respected and cherished by so many". Sava says Scalise has responded to family members while he's still under sedation.
The contest is a summertime tradition in Washington dating to 1909 and is known as a time for friendly competition between Republicans and Democrats, even at times when fractious political debates are the norm on Capitol Hill. He said it is now hard to predict how long Scalise will need to remain in the hospital but they should have a better idea of that in the coming days.
The bullet damaged blood vessels, bones, and internal organs, Sava said.
Hodgkinson had a history of posting angry messages against Mr Trump and other Republicans on social media.
Capitol Police Officer David Bailey, wounded in yesterday's attack, throws out the first pitch at the Congressional Baseball Game.
Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch, and Barth also showed up for the game, walking with crutches.
