"I really don't pay a lot of attention to it".
The specifics of the deal, first reported by David Aldridge, appear to be as follows: Boston will take back the third overall pick in this year's draft, as well as the Los Angeles Lakers' pick in the 2018 draft, now owned by the Sixers.
The Sixers move up and will surely select Washington point guard Markelle Fultz with the top pick, the Celtics get the No. 3 pick and a future first-rounder, either via the Los Angeles Lakers next summer, or Sacramento in 2019. But the Sixers get to keep it if it falls No. 1 overall. If you look at the elite defensive teams in the league, their rosters are packed with players who can switch on defense and cover multiple positions.
The Sixers have a ton - A TON - of picks to work with in the next few years. On Saturday, the Boston Celtics did what most National Basketball Association followers believed they should do - trade the No. 1 pick in this year's National Basketball Association draft. And yet, the deal looks to be for picks, and not players.
Well, according to David Aldridge, the two sides have come to an agreement and the trade will become official on Monday.
Almost four decades later, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge, who has often referenced Auerbach's fearless and emotionless approach to roster construction, traded the No. 1 pick in the 2017 draft - or the right to draft Fultz - to the Philadelphia 76ers for a pair of first-round picks that Ainge must believe will eventually help Boston take a step forward in its quest to return to title contender again.
For the second straight year, it appears the Sixers will have the No. 1 overall pick. And if this is a simple difference in player evaluation between Danny Ainge and Bryan Colangelo, it's not the Sixers who are going against the grain.
Sources have also said that he was disappointed when the Sixers weren't awarded the first pick in last month's lottery.
The Boston Celtics just made a move that may be questionable.
The Boston Celtics have a loaded backcourt and adding a player like Fultz or even Lonzo Ball would just clutter that backcourt even more.
Fultz, projected as a blue-chip scorer, now has Sixers general manager Bryan Colangelo envisioning a flawless fit with Embiid, Simmons and Saric. Of course, they'll all have to stay healthy. "And then there are these trade rumors that could have an effect on the draft order".
Philadelphia had the No. 1 draft spot three previous times, taking Doug Collins in 1973, Allen Iverson in 1996 and Ben Simmons a year ago. Do the Sixers have five roster spots now to give to players all 20 years old or younger?
If the Sixers are fortunate, Fultz will get to achieve them in Philadelphia. Probably not, no. But the Sixers don't have the No. 1 pick next year.
So, if Jimmy Butler or Paul George are available, does Ainge view them as a veteran who might be five percent better, or are they players worthy of a package of picks and youngers players? They no longer have it, they traded it off. The Celtics wouldn't give up the pick if they didn't have a plan, and that likely includes resigning Thomas to a longterm deal. Philadelphia may be hoping Fultz can lead them in a positive direction going forward.
At the end of the day, ratings mean that people are watching games. There are reports the Celtics are interested in one of the top wings in this year's draft, either Kansas' Josh Jackson or Duke's Jayson Tatum.
Kentucky point guard De'Aaron Fox worked out individually for the Sixers on Saturday.
Some executives believe that Florida State forward Jonathan Isaac might have a small chance of moving into the top five. James acts as the facilitator of the offense and gets everyone else involved while Irving plays in attack mode from start to finish. Tonight, that got a little bit harder.
