The 30-man roster will be announced during the NHL Awards Show on Wednesday at T-Mobile Arena. It's possible Vegas general manager George McPhee might consider Ward, a veteran and former Stanley Cup victor with the Canes, or could take Lack.
And after the expansion draft?
Arizona: The big loss for the Coyotes could be Jamie McGinn, if the Golden Knights are inclined to select the winger.
The deadline for the 30 other teams to make a predraft trade among themselves was noon Saturday and won't be lifted until 5 a.m. Thursday. Vegas certainly will be able to be competitive early on if that's the route they choose to go in the National Hockey League expansion draft.
What guidelines must Vegas follow?
NY Islanders: Much like the Wild, the Islanders' failure to make a move ahead of the roster freeze means at least one defender is likely heading to the Golden Knights.
San Jose had the luxury of not having any contracts containing No Movement Clauses on the books.
Defensively, Jason Demers was also left available to the Knights less than a year after he joined the Panthers as a free agent from Dallas.
"People have identified people on other clubs they'd like to have", McPhee said. TSN reported two weeks ago the Hawks were in talks with the Knights to take on Kruger's contract in a trade while taking van Riemsdyk in the expansion draft. The Penguins instead protected Matt Murray a week after the second-year goalie led them to win their second consecutive championship.
With that in mind, which players will the Blackhawks protect, and which ones will they let go? Whether they then elect to trade him to a team that needs a goalie (like Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary or.gulp, Philly) or keep him for themselves (which TSN's Ray Ferraro thinks they will do), Fleury has the most value for a new team.
Prospects: All players with less than three years of professional experience are automatically exempt. Vegas could agree, for example, not to pick a certain player in exchange for a draft pick.
But which players could the Boston Bruins potentially lose?
The Golden Knights can't just claim a bunch of low-priced players and tank for profits and high draft picks in their inaugural season; they are required to reach the National Hockey League salary floor, which according to Elliotte Friedman, will be set at $55.4 million for 2017-2018.
But more prominent names figure to be on the horizon for Vegas thanks to the expansion draft. They also have to reach at least 60 percent of last year's $73 million salary cap ($43.8 million) and have at least 20 players under contract for next season.
The Kings have many fine players worth placing on their protected list, including defenseman Drew Doughty, center Anze Kopitar and goaltender Jonathan Quick. Johnson now has 237 career points (61 goals, 176 assists) in 575 games played.
The Golden Knights will be allowed first crack at any pending unrestricted or restricted free agent, as long as that player is not protected in the Expansion Draft. The protected players from Las Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft have been released.
The Devils had a need on the back end (still do) and Wilson was able to parlay that need into a couple very valuable assets.style="text-align: center;"
