Now, it seems, it is indeed changing.
Trump's salvo did not name Rosenstein, whom he himself appointed, but the deputy attorney general is the only person who fits both actions described in the tweet-which also appears to confirms reports that special counsel Robert Mueller is indeed investigating the president for obstruction of justice. "It would be illegal to destroy it and it could be subpoenaed by an investigator like Robert Mueller, turned into a transcript that he would have at his fingertips", Perlstein said in the video.
Then, in a subsequent interview on "Fox News Sunday", Sekulow sowed further confusion by saying Trump was under investigation - then denied he said anything of the sort. If you credit Comey's sworn account over Trump's news conference denials, Trump demanded Comey's loyalty; pressed him to drop the case against Flynn; and eventually fired Comey himself because of his handling of "this Russian Federation thing".
Rosenstein is overseeing Mueller's work since Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the investigation because of his ties and participation with the 2016 Trump campaign. At the same time, it could be that Mueller is merely interviewing some folks as a way of deciding whether he should widen his investigation to include Trump. Trump also bragged to visiting Russian diplomats that getting rid of Comey relieved him of great pressure because of Russia.. Although the White House initially said Rosenstein's memo led Trump to fire Comey, the president later said in a television interview that he did so because of the Russian Federation investigation.
But while Mueller mulls over that decision, more and more voices are being raised calling for him to step aside due to a serious conflict of interest that probe would represent.
TRUMP tweet Friday: "After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my 'collusion with the Russians, ' nobody has been able to show any proof". Trump said previously that a memo from Rosenstein recommending the Federal Bureau of Investigation director's termination didn't matter. Mueller operates with day-to-day independence of Rosenstein, but Rosenstein still oversees how the investigation is funded.
The legal team, like the president, has come out ready to hit hard, even if not always quite accurately.
Before Trump had tweeted he was under investigation, Mark Carallo, a spokesman for Trump's personal attorney Marc Kasowitz, did not deny the Post report but questioned the legality of the leaking information about the investigation, calling it " outrageous, inexcusable and illegal". He said a Friday tweet from Mr Trump was specifically directed at a story in "The Washington Post" about the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.
A representative from President Donald Trump's legal team said Trump is not under investigation, despite the president tweeting "I am being investigated" this week. "The president is not a subject or target of an investigation". The lessons of history suggest such traumas raise questions of political legitimacy and constitutional process that have the potential to sour life in Washington for years in the future. Rosenstein needed to name a special counsel.
Things got testy as the two sparred over Sekulow's contention that they have not been informed about an obstruction investigation, before Cuomo asked why Sekulow can't simply "make a phone call" and find out if Trump is being looked at.
Although administration officials downplayed the situation and said they "would not be concerned" about a back channel, national security experts expressed alarm at the development, pointing out that while back channels are indeed normal, it was not normal to ask to use the facilities of a hostile foreign power to conduct such communications.
