The film officially opened at number one this weekend, well above the initial $90 million opening many predicted a month out from release. Tom Holland's take on the character has been universally-praised and helped drive the critical reaction up to 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. No way was Sony ever going to give up on Spider-Man. When combined with ticket sales across the globe, Homecoming has now grossed just north of $257 million, a figure which should continue to increase as tickets continue to sell throughout the day.
The movie has already earned $56.9 million domestically and is just a shade under $71 million globally, a piston-popping return on its $34 million budget.
Illumination Entertainment's latest film brought in $33.9 million in its second weekend to raise its domestic total to $149.1 million.
Well, this weekend Sony gained two new heart throbs. By comparison, Wrights' previous movies Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The World's End, Hot Fuzz, and Shaun of the Dead earned, respectively, $47.7 million, $46.1 million, $80.6 million, and $30 million at the end of their entire runs. "Baby Driver" should sit comfortable in third, as positive word of a mouth is steering to a $12.8 million second weekend, or a 38% drop. The film's high review scores and positive word of mouth is clearly having an effect here. The Raimi-led series was sailing high when that third movie opened in 2007 - hence the big start - but it still went on to log the weakest domestic finish of the three.
This time around, it's clear fans are excited to get more movies featuring their friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. If we take into account its worldwide numbers, the movie has received $745 million.
Origin stories are great for lesser known characters, but if DC's Wonder Woman proved anything it's you don't have to spend half a film on them. Is $400 million possible? "We have him starting the scene with such self-doubt and helplessness, in a way that you really see the kid".
