Family, friends, and colleagues will gather at a church in the Bronx to say their final goodbyes.
Alexander Bonds, 34, shot and killed Familia at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday as she sat in a NYPD mobile command vehicle, officials said. Similar circumstances were in play back in March when a 25-year-old man with an extensive rap sheet fatally ran over an Emergency Medical Technician who was trying to prevent him from stealing her vehicle. Investigators called it an "unprovoked attack".
What happened to Officer Miosotis Familia hit the law enforcement community hard.
On Monday, another NY officer was fatally shot in the line of duty.
But de Blasio's departure meant he missed an NYPD swearing in ceremony and also a vigil held for Officer Familia.
Many of those in attendance did not know Officer Familia personally, but felt strongly about honoring her memory. Mullins said that de Blasio should come out and explain "the police are not your enemy", but the mayor has not done that yet. "She wanted to sacrifice for us, so she did it".
Familia was a 12 year veteran of the force.
The Fourth of July proved to be a calm night with little crime, but that all changed when police say Bonds assassinated Familia.
Familia, 48, a daughter of Dominican immigrants named for a flower known as the forget-me-not, was remembered during a funeral service punctuated by heart-rending speeches by her children, Mayor Bill de Blasio and others. "And even worse because of the way she was targeted".
He then ran from scene but was shot and killed by responding officers when police said he pulled the gun on them.
