If you have to choose a big saloon from one of Germany's "Premium" trio, the choice for most would probably come down to the driver's option - the BMW 7 Series - or the luxury option - the Mercedes S Class. The new active suspension will be one of the standout features of the uber-sedan, and it will utilize an advanced camera system coupled with individual electric motors so each wheel can adapt incredibly precisely to different road surfaces. This is the only Audi A8 coupe in existence, and yes it's real.
On highways at up to 60 km/h, the autonomous system can take full control of the vehicle and permits the driver to completely remove their hands from the steering wheel.
Inside the cabin, the new Audi has a clean and contemporary looking dashboard, a redesigned multi-function steering wheel and touchscreen controls similar to those first seen on the Prologue concept vehicle.
The £70,000 luxury saloon is packed with gadgets and claims to be the first "Level 3" driverless vehicle.
Traffic jam pilot manages starting, accelerating, steering and braking.
The 2017 Audi A8 made its blink-and-you'll-miss it debut in the new Spider-Man film. The range of mild hybrid powertrains is accompanied with a 48-volt electrical system.
Tesla also does not permit the driver to fully check out from driving though. The front grille with horizontal lines now makes the new A8 look wider than it has been so far and gains a muscular look which is what the designers were aiming to achieve in the first place.
The second fun technology powered by the 48-volt system is the new suspension.
Audi's all-new flagship sedan, the 2018 A8, sets not only a new standard for the brand's design language and comfort capabilities but also, possibly, the bar for technological acumen in the luxury auto segment. The dashboard of the new A8 has been kept largely clear of physical buttons or switches.
Later, there will be a long-wheel base Audi A8 L e-tron quattro with plug-in hybrid drive offering a 31-mile EV range. But without a legal framework for its operation in many markets, Audi says it will adopt a step-by-step approach to the introduction of its new autonomous driving tech. Executing on the brand's so-called "black panel architecture", the interior skips the rotary knob and touchpad of old in favor of of a pair of touch-sensitive panels to control everything from the infotainment system to the climate control functions.
On the road, the A8 will have a diesel 3.0-litre V6 producing 282bhp or a petrol 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 with 335bhp from launch.
Then there's the optional "relaxation seat", which is at the rear on the passenger's side, and lets a passenger "warm and massage the soles of their feet". When you need to park, the A8 can enter a garage or space without anyone present inside - with remote monitoring and activation via the user's smartphone.
Two additional engines, a 4.0-litre petrol and diesel, will be added soon after launch.
Of course, if the road ahead clears and traffic accelerates beyond Traffic Jam Assist's 37-mph threshold, the system will audibly and visually alert the driver to retake control, giving him or her a 10-second window to get with the program. It's not exactly a hybrid, instead it comes with what's called a BAS (Belt Alternator Starter).
