After a less than impressive first half, the USA finally took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute thanks to Omar Gonzalez, who was positioned inches in front of the net when he received the ball and poked it past Martinique goalkeeper Emmanuel Vermignon. But he'll take shots on net when he spies an advantage, such as the equalizer vs. the U.S.in their last match.
Sporting Kansas City trio Matt Besler, Dom Dwyer and Graham Zusi were unused substitutes after starting the Group B opener on Saturday against Panama.
But the visitors would not give up, amazingly rallying to make it 2-2 with two goals in ten minutes from Kevin Parsemain, with the first coming on 66 minutes. And then a quirky, deflected shot leveled the score with 15 minutes remaining.
The U.S. and Panama each have four points (1-0-1) but the Americans lead the group because they have scored more goals. In the 64th, an overlapping Eric Lichaj crossed to the near post for Morris' redirect from four yards. Mexico cruised to a 3-1 win over Central American counterparts El Salvador.
Was it a C Team?
There was little for Bruce Arena to smile about as the US labored to victory vs. Martinique. The final US sub was McCarty coming in for Agudelo in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Morris has been working through a rough patch of form lately with the Seattle Sounders and has looked low on confidence. As good as the team looked as far as runs and build-up play go - and at times, likes the ones above, they looked damn good - they were abysmal finishing. His shot was saved by Guzan, but Parsemain's follow up took a big deflection and floated in.
At the 40-minute mark, with game still scoreless, the Yanks were desperate to score a goal but it was Martinique that came closest.
An offside call on Martinique's Sebastien Cretinoir in the 84th minute negated what would have been a tying goal. On Wednesday night, Lichaj showed why US fans have been calling for him to get a chance. We turned over way too much.
Omar Gonzalez and Morris had put U.S. in control, but they were stunningly pegged back by a Kevin Parsemain double.
The U.S. and Martinique had met just once before, with the Americans winning 2-0 in the group stage of the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup. His performance against Martinique did not hurt his chances but probably didn't do enough.
Agudelo, in particular, seemed determined to produce a strike, often to the detriment of his teammates. Eastern, and lineups will be posted one hour before kickoff. Parsemain immediately fired past diving goalkeeper Brad Guzan. Zardes, who had struggled throughout the match, earned the assist with a good run down the left flank and a cross that landed right in Morris' path. Far from it. That doesn't mean there can't be disappointment with the way this US has performed so far.
USA coach Bruce Arena kept his word, significantly rotating the roster.
